This first part of the Vogler reading was about crossing the threshold. The "crossing the first threshold is an act of the will in which the hero commits wholeheartedly to the adventure" (volger, 127). Threshold guardians are people who try to block your way. They test the hero at any point in the story. Having the courage to do what you want is called taking the leap of faith. The next part of the reading was called tests, allies, and enemies. The hero is at this point on his journey and has now crossed into the new world. This period is mostly for testing the hero and push his boundries.
The first part of the section suprised me. I never thought about the actual crossing of the threshold in a movie. It made me think about an action/adventure movie when the hero has to make a large and actual leap of faith across two widely spaced objects such as mountains of iceburgs. The sixth stage reminded me of a James Bond movie with the whole allies and sidekick idea. You usually think of sidekicks as in adventure/action but never as in a comical sidekick.
The crossing of the threshold was never something I thought of before. I never took the time to break it down and analize what the character is doing and why. I never took the time to analize the characters of the allies and enemies either. They were both characters I could indenfity, but I never took the time to analyze why they do and act the way they do.
1. Who is a good example of a threshold guardian?
2. What is the most shocking leap of faith? What has been a leap of faith that has stayed in your mind and you have remembered?
3. What is the coolest way you have a seen a character been "tested"?
